AGNOSTIC DEISM: The God of Chance

It is fascinating how fluently we let incompatibilities co-exist in our lives. In one sense, it is perfectly understandable. We have so many events and facts which are unexplained in our lives that we automatically let them all live together without ever attempting to understand how they relate to each other or whether they are compatible when placed in sharp juxtaposition. If we attempted to figure out everything that we encounter in our lives and how it fits with everything else, we would be driven crazy. It makes life so much more comfortable if we just accept everything as it is, and not try to analyze it. It just is. Why worry yourself to death about whether one belief fits with another belief, as long as they are not causing any conflict or any harm in your life?

Aye, there’s the rub. Is there any harm in believing in a personal God who began the universe, who controls human events, who is attainable from humans, and who directs human decisions if we just listen to his messages? Do we not make just and righteous decisions if we listen to our personal God? Are we not going to be chosen by this personal God and favored by this personal God if we simply follow his directions? Are there not in everyone’s life moments of spine-tingling awe and reverence at the mystery of new life? Are you not at times simply overcome and engulfed by love? Are there not certain scenes, certain times, and certain human actions that simply overwhelm you with their beauty? Is there not an awesome Something out there we need to tune ourselves to if we are to obtain direction in our lives?

The above collection of concepts probably comes close to the religious beliefs of millions of people in this world, each of whom probably beyond these basic concepts has a different interpretation of exactly how these beliefs are manifested in this world. According to your religion, your personal God has a different name, different directions for your life, different demands on your life, different interpretations of how you should orient your life toward your fellow humans, and greatly different directions as to how reverent you are towards other life. What happens then? What happens is that atrocities are created from one human upon another “in the name of God,” or because “this is what God wills.” Aye, there is a rub. There is a deep wound-searing, amputating, beheading, bloody massacre, bomb blasting, viciously destructive type of rub, all in the name of our personal God.

The problem is that deep reverence for the creation of the universe, for the beauty of life, for moments of overwhelming love, and deep reverence for all other humans, are not compatible with belief in a personal God who has only certain chosen people. When carried to their inevitable manifestations and conclusions, these two concepts clash violently.

If you are wedded to your religious beliefs and do not want them to change, this book is not for you. Do not attempt to read it; it will simply make you angry. If you sometimes wonder why the dogma of your church does not make sense, and wonder how murder, massacre and war can be condoned in the name of God, then read on. “Agnostic Deism” embraces the deepest of reverence for the creation, the deepest of reverence for all life, and the deepest wonder at moments of “oneness.” It just doesn't have a personal God. According to this book, the sooner we get rid of our personal Gods, the better off we will all be.

The answers to the questions posed in paragraph two are: Yes, No, No, Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes.
